The economic vitality and environmental beauty of the Gulf Coast is what has attracted communities to settle this region over and over again despite storms, war, famine, fire, and disease. Because of the increased population and economic development, resiliency and sustainability amid crisis are more important than ever. Not only do communities have more to lose during and in the aftermath of a disaster, but past development procedures and short-sighted actions have compromised the ecosystem’s natural ability to adapt to and recover from change. It will take adjustments in our day-to-day lives as well as changes in our long-term coastal development plans to make the natural, built and social environments more resilient. The Gulf of Mexico Alliance’s course of action to tackle these problems includes assessment, management and communication of risk and resilience.
